Jigmi Y. Thinley

Jigmi Y. Thinley is Bhutan’s first democratically elected Prime Minister (2008–2013). He is the foremost advocate of Gross National Happiness (GNH) and its index of nine domains for holistic wellbeing. His government pledged Bhutan would forever remain carbon neutral. In the run-up to Rio+20 and the adoption of SDGs, he hosted the ‘High Level Meeting’ at the UN, New York on ‘…Defining a New Economic Paradigm’ in 2012. He chaired the International Experts Group that reported to the UN SG and held a “Climate Summit for a Living Himalayas” in 2011 for the leaders of south Asia.
